Notebooks And Computers - Intel shows processor with 48 cores

Intel has demonstrated an 48 core processor 'single-chip computer cloud', manufactured using 45nm technology, this prototype chip size of 567mm2, and has the features mentioned above 48 'IA-32' core, 4 DDR3 memory, network bandwidth 256 GB / s and power consumption from 25W to 125W. Name cloud single-chip computer (SCC) is given for this chip design resembles the organization of data centers that are used in cloud computing.

"With this chip, you can imagine the future of cloud data center more energy efficient than what is currently available, saving significant resources such as places and costs," said Justin Rattner, head of Intel Labs and Intel Chief Technology Officer. "Over time, I hope this concept further to find a way into mainstream devices, such as advanced automotive technology, electronic engine controls, air bags and anti-lock braking that eventually all cars eventually implemented."

Many-core technology is expected to add the feature scaling "extraordinary" to the system and enable new applications. New step towards the future many-core processors made possible through a collaboration between Intel Labs in Bangalore (India), and research centers in Braunschweig (Germany) and Hillsboro (U.S.).

In order to help the development of applications to many-core processors, Intel will make 100 or more chips as presented today to be given to industrial and academic research around the world. Further details about the architecture of 48-core chip and the circuit will be published in a paper at the International Solid State Circuits Conference in February.
